Story of Umeå IK

Swedish club Umeå IK was founded in 1917 and is today represented by teams playing six different sports. However, in terms of football, Umeå only has women’s teams, playing at both junior and senior levels. They are currently one of the biggest women’s club sides in the world.

Umeå IK’s women’s teams were launched in the early 1980s, but back then the focus was exclusively on youth football. The senior team was only formed in September 1984, playing its maiden season in the fourth division of Sweden’s domestic league in 1985.

By 1996, they had reached the top division. The record crowd for a home game, achieved in 2004, is 8,987. The current first-team squad comprises 18 players, of which 12 are Swedish, two are Norwegian, two are Brazilian, one is Swiss and one Chinese.
